Bergen County Christian Academy was founded as Hackensack Christian Schools in 1973 as a ministry of the First Baptist Church of Hackensack. Hackensack Christian was renamed Bergen County Christian Academy in 2016. At BCCA our mission is to partner with parents and the local church to provide students with a quality education, grounded in Biblical principals, all for the glory of God.
In January of 1972, Pastor Robert C. Gage, the Senior Pastor of First Baptist Hackensack at that time, appointed a Special Investigation Committee to research if a Christian School would be plausible in Hackensack, NJ. The committee concluded that the need for a Christian School was evident and recommended to Pastor Gage and the congregation that the Christian school be established for September of 1973.
Ultimately, the school was established in 1973, and Mr. Bob Brower was appointed by the School Committee as the Administrator of the Hackensack Christian Schools. The blessings of God became evident as parents asked the school leaders to add more classes and, in just 2 years, HCS was able to offer a full Pre-K thru 12th grade program.
In the early years, many classes were located in the large Education Building. Although not originally designed for a Christian school, it met the needs of the young school and provided space for learning and growth. When the school outgrew the Education Building, several classrooms were rented in the nearby First Presbyterian Church.
By July 1975, Pastor Robert C. Gage established a Building Committee to determine all needs for both the growing school and church. The committee collected research and determined that a new building would be necessary to accommodate all needs. Therefore in 1977, First Baptist officially began the Leach Memorial Building Program, and in 1978 the building, which included several classrooms, science labs, a kitchen, locker rooms, and a gymnasium was fully completed.
In 2016, the Academy Education Committee determined, in order to reach a larger community of the greater Bergen County region, to rename Hackensack Christian Schools to Bergen County Christian Academy, effective September 2016. This name change has proven to be successful for the growth of BCCA. In 2017, after prayer and financial giving, Bergen County Christian Academy was able to have extensive renovations completed to the Leach Memorial Building Athletic Facility.
Through this renovation, a new gym floor, additional safety guards, and stands for our Crusader fans were installed in the gymnasium. In addition to the gymnasium, the locker rooms were completely reconstructed. The installation of new lockers, vanities, and ceilings that remove moisturization help our students maintain proper hygienic habits. God has blessed our school with a positive spiritual attitude. His faithfulness continues today as we work in partnership with parents to educate young people in the context of Biblical truths and Christ-centered values to enrich the lives of the students we are honored to serve.
